A fondness for tentacles

A fondness for tentacles

As I mention in my bio, I like tentacles. I also hold a respected fondness for that silently creeping uneasiness that Lovecraft penned so well.. and when I was given the chance to illustrate Christian’s tale of this very author’s impact on an impressionable mind, well, I grinned… drunkenly I’m sure.
In keeping with Christian’s subject [...]

It’s Steam Engines when it’s Steam Engines time.

It’s Steam Engines when it’s Steam Engines time.

Mad old Charles Fort used to say ‘It’s Steam Engines when it’s Steam Engines time.’ Things make themselves available to you when you’re ready for them. For me, I read Lovecraft at the time a young man should. This is the story of how a bad dream refused to come true.

Living right next to a myth…

Living right next to a myth…

We can send people to the moon.
We can see what’s happening on Mars.
Yet we have this enormous creature right here on earth that, even with all of our incredible technology, we are yet to see alive in its natural habitat.
It’s like living right next to a myth.
I love colossal squids because of what they represent; [...]

Bringing my words to life…

Bringing my words to life…

I’d had this idea knocking around my head, something about brothers (or sisters) containing a devastating power within them. Kind of like a doomsday device that is triggered by the death of one or the other of them. Being asked to contribute to the Flinch anthology gave me the chance to explore the idea a [...]

Progression

Progression

Being approached to create something for this collection was an amazing incentive to better and further myself. I tend to work better when there is reason behind my work, and this opportunity has given me a small space through which I can say something personal about people.
The ‘Way Out’ comic represents my first step into [...]

‘Moral Lessons’ Artwork

‘Moral Lessons’ Artwork

These are part of a series of images vaguely inspired by nineteenth century conduct books, but really just elaborations of free-floating doodles from my sketchbooks – especially those I can never properly explain.

A strange old house on a chill autumn evening…

A strange old house on a chill autumn evening…

A lifelong fan of comic books and the graphic novel form, I’m delighted to have “The Daemon Street Ghost-Trap” given such a faithful and classy treatment by Skye Ogden.
I’ve always been interested in exploring and re-working the elements of the traditional ghost story, and “The Daemon Street Ghost-Trap” was an early attempt to do just [...]

Relief & Pride

Relief & Pride

The feeling one gets on finally publishing their first book is a mixture of relief and pride. I recommend it to anyone. If you have the talent, then do it. Finish your book, print off a few copies, and start selling them through your website, local stores, conventions and friends. Believe me, you’ll wonder why [...]

96,000m

96,000m

“96,000M” started out as 2000AD proposal. I’d been wanting to send something in to 2000AD but didn’t have anything that was really appropriate.  I’d just finished illustrating Tom Taylor’s play “Drip” for Brief Cases and asked Tom if he could whip me up a script. The result was “96,000M.”
I took my time in getting the [...]
